Get hands-on expert advice in on the care and feeding of your new fundraising ideas without ignoring the importance of fundraising and fund development fundamentals.

In collaboration with ALA and 37 state humanities councils, NEH has supported development of a discussion program for libraries that probes the meanings of the American Civil War during its sesquicentennial. Following the popular “Let’s Talk About It” model, the program engages participants in discussion of related texts selected by Civil War historian Edward Ayers. Attend this session for how-to information on hosting the series, an overview of the discussion model, and details about funding opportunities for this and other programs about the Civil War.

In spring 2012, UW-Madison MERIT Library offered six instructional technology trainings to Madison Metropolitan School District schools including Sennett Middle School and Lincoln Elementary. As a new initiative, the trainings focused on equipping teachers to use technology to aid in the construction of knowledge. Trainings focused on using Google Applications including but not limited to Google Earth, Google Books, and Google Documents for peer review, self-graded quizzes, games, and more. In addition, library staff also provided training on using Interactive White Boards to create active and collaborative lesson plans that enhance knowledge and critical thinking skills.

The ACRL Image Resources Interest Group provides a forum for ongoing discussion of the unique issues presented by the development and support of interdisciplinary image resources in academic libraries.

Texas Tech University Librarians removed from the traditional reference desk are free to take more active roles within their assigned subject areas enabling them to provide individualized service and presenting librarians with new challenges and opportunities.

This discussion will be facilitated by the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards Review Task Force, which is charged with "reviewing the document and make a recommendation to retain the information literacy competency standards for higher education as written for the next five-year cycle, revise the standards, or rescind the standards if determined no longer useful." The Task Force would like to engage instruction librarians on sustained discussion on the current utility and future direction of the Standards.

The workshop will provide an overview of best practices in the graphical presentation of quantitative information, emphasizing the need for clarity, fairness, and efficiency. The purpose of data visualization is to display data impartially in order to uncover the ‘stories’ data have to tell. Attendees will learn to adopt practices that enhance effective portrayal of these stories and to avoid those that interfere. Guidelines for choosing chart styles, highlighting key data patterns, and more will be presented. Examples of poor practices lurking in popular graphical software features will be included.

Belgrade City Library (BCL) represents the largest public library network in Southeast Europe. Despite the economic crisis, BCL reached a record number of members in 2010 and overcame a number of challenges.To fulfill ever-changing patrons’ needs, BCL needed to provide staff with the skills and support they need to do their jobs effectively. This is a showcase of what happened behind-the-scenes: where professionals find their inspiration and how they carve new paths in library development.

Digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information. Librarians serving diverse, underserved communities are regularly confronted with digital literacy dilemmas. In addition to providing access to technology and basic and increasingly creative instruction, they must address the boundaries of patron privacy, the increasing importance of adaptive technology, and the complex issues around digital citizenship. Join our panelists in exploring the tools of the new surveillance regime, such as data mining, security cameras, locational tracking, and biometric identifiers and learn about their potential for abuse and the need to establish a system of transparency and accountability to protect our civil liberties.
