All Sessions

An unconference is a participant-guided experience that harnesses the unstructured conversations people usually have between conference sessions into the conference itself. Unlike most conferences where talking heads and group leaders decide what is important, unconferences are organized by the crowd. Unconferences are about sharing the knowledge and passion we have for our profession and taking what we learn into the world to make a difference. Everyone has something to share. Everyone has something to learn. We can all change the world.

ALTAFF’s popular Nuts & Bolts is jam-packed to inspire Trustees, Friends, and Foundations. Coffee begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by topics including engaging volunteers for you library and Friends group, advocacy, social media, and inspiring success stories. Lunch on your own. The afternoon session begins with David Levinson, author of “Everyone Helps, Everyone Wins.” Deborah Stone from ALA’s Office of Intellectual Freedom will talk about current hot topics followed by the popular roundtable discussions. Discussion of cataloging issues related to Western European material

Three presentations will be featured on the topic of Resource Description & Access:

Judith Cannan, Chief, Cooperative & Instructional Programs Division, Library of Congress, will discuss the Library of Congress RDA training plan for staff located in the U.S. and in LC's overseas offices.

Cynthia Whitacre, Manager, WorldCat Quality & Partner Content Department, OCLC: OCLC members were invited early in 2012 to share comments on the OCLC discussion paper on RDA. Cynthia will share feedback received from member libraries on implementation of RDA and what the next steps will be for OCLC. Initial plans for OCLC member training, revised OCLC documentation, and what to expect in WorldCat bibliographic records with RDA implementation by the US national libraries in 2013 will be included.

Chris Cronin, Director of Technical Services, University of Chicago, will give background on how the University of Chicago implemented RDA, and will discuss policies and procedures for handling copy when found in the utilities, whether it be RDA or not. Chris will explain why the University of Chicago implemented RDA immediately after the formal test, challenges they encountered, and the impact on staff and training.

Taking instruction to the next level: creating evaluations to assess student learning online: Attendees will be provided with a brief background in assessment methods as well as examples of assessments used specifically to evaluate online learning tools such as tutorials, course guides, course management systems, etc. Participants will learn how to create effective assessments tailored to their needs, and examples of assessments used at several institutions to evaluate various online learning tools will be shared. Co-sponsored by the STS Hot Topics Discussion Group and the STS Assessment Committee.
