After months of deliberation, the AASL Best Websites for Teaching and Learning Committee is finally ready to unveil the AASL 2012 Top 25 Websites for Teaching and Learning. Join the committee as they share 25 websites that best support the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, inquiry learning and the curriculum.

The Book of the Year Awards were established to bring increased attention from librarians and booksellers to the literary achievements of independent publishers and their authors. At the Awards Ceremony, held during ALA's annual conference, ForeWord announces three winners in each of the sixty categories and presents two $1,500 prizes for the Best Fiction and Best Nonfiction titles. In addition, ForeWord presents an Independent Publisher of the Year award to a publisher who produces innovative, relevant, and original books for today’s readers. ForeWord is the only review journal devoted exclusively to covering books from independent houses--ranging in size from university presses publishing up to a hundred titles a year to niche, POD, and small presses who may publish one title in a lifetime.

Celebrate Kadir Nelson, Shane W. Evans, and Ashley Bryan at the 2012 Coretta Scott King Book Awards Breakfast honoring the year's best African American authors and illustrators of books for youth. Individual tickets may be purchased for $50 each prior to the Early-Bird Registration deadline of May 13, 2012, and for $60 between May 14 and June 15, 2012. Tables may be reserved by purchasing 10, 20, 30, or 40 individual tickets for $50 each prior to May 13, 2012. All ticket sales will end on June 15—tickets will NOT be available from the registration desk.

The Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association hosts their annual literary awards. The Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literature honor and recognize individual works about Asian/Pacific Americans and their heritage with exceptional literary and artistic merit. A morning event with refreshments and light breakfast.

The 2012 EBSCO/ALA Conference Sponsorship Award winners will be hosted at an EBSCO-sponsored breakfast.

Following the recognition of PLA’s 2012 award winners, the Public Library Association (PLA) and PLA President, Marcia Warner, will welcome keynote speaker Sherman Alexie to the PLA President’s Program and Awards Presentation.

Sherman Alexie is the author of twenty-two books, including The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, winner of the 2007 National Book Award for Young People's Literature; War Dances, winner of the 2010 PEN Faulkner Award; and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, a PEN Hemingway Special Citation winner. He is also the winner of the 2001 PEN Malamud Award for Excellence in the Art of the Short Story. In addition, Smoke Signals, the film he wrote and co-produced, won the Audience Award and Filmmakers' Trophy at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. His new collection of stories BLASPHEMY will be published in October 2012.

Join ALSC and REFORMA in celebrating the 2012 Pura Belpré Medal winners Guadalupe Garcia McCall (author) and Duncan Tonatiuh (illustrator), and honorees Margarita Engle, Xavier Garza, Rafael Lopez, and Sara Palacios, as they receive their awards and deliver their acceptance speeches. The Celebraciòn is a free, joyful event featuring local entertainment and a book signing by the winning authors and illustrators.

This program features our ongoing roundtable discussion about trends and advances in library technology by a panel of LITA technology experts. The panelists will describe changes and advances in technology that they see having an impact on the library world, and suggest what libraries might do to take advantage of these trends. Presentation of LITA Awards and Scholarships will take place prior to the Top Tech Trends program.

The annual presentation of the Katharine Kyes Leab and Daniel J. Leab American Book Prices Current Awards for outstanding printed exhibition catalogs and guides, and electronic exhibitions, produced by United States and Canadian institutions.

Committee chairs, discussion group leaders, liaisons, and others present brief reports on the work of their committees and groups. This meeting is the best way to learn what RBMS is up to.
