Spectrum Institute Welcoming Reception with ALA Leadership

Spectrum Institute Dinner

This Spectrum Institute session explores the interconnectedness of our identities, the unique ways that we define ourselves, and our values, beliefs and biases. We will use exercises to help us learn about who we are and how we impact others, and similarly, who others are and how they impact us. Come prepared to participate in this highly interactive session. Facilitated by Alanna Aiko Moore, Sociology, Ethnic Studies and Gender Studies Librarian, University of California, San Diego.

Spectrum Institute Breakfast

New and experienced External Review Panelist (ERP) pool members are invited and encouraged to attend this session on the role of ERP members in the ALA accreditation process. Participants will learn about the comprehensive review process and timeline, hear from experienced panelists, and work in a group to analyze a sample Program Presentation. This session will focus on Standard II: Curriculum of the 2008 ALA Standards for Accreditation.

Participation in a training session is a prerequisite for serving on a review panel. Currently assigned ERPs are especially encouraged to attend.

Something for everyone – including the nature lover! Join the AASL Independent Schools Section as they visit Flintridge Prep, an Upper Level Independent School near Pasadena and Los Angeles. Then, tour Polytechnic, a co-ed K-12 independent school, which is also the setting for the television show, “Big Bang Theory.” Finally we will head to the Huntington Library to view their superb collection of books, art and tour their famous gardens.

This is a leadership development workshop for the 2012 Emerging Leader participants.

An informal meeting to share information regarding print archive projects

New and experienced reviewers are encouraged to attend this session featuring Rebecca Pasco, Chair of the NCATE Coordinating Committee, and Elizabeth Vilky, Accreditation Associate for Program Review at NCATE. Reviewers will learn about the NCATE process, the 2010 ALA/AASL Standards for Initial Preparation of School Librarians, writing and reviewing reports, and appropriate assessments. Special focus will be on the newly approved 2010 Standards and their application in the review process. Attendees will study a sample report and participate in a review exercise. Program report writers are welcome to attend as observers.

Spectrum Institute You’re Hired

Experienced External Review Panelists (ERPs) and LIS faculty (especially administrators) are invited and encouraged to attend this session on the ALA accreditation appeal process and policies. Experienced ERPs who complete this training would be eligible to serve on an Appeal Review Committee in the event of an appeal.

ERPs assigned to a review where the accreditation decision could result in an appeal are especially encouraged to attend.

The training will cover grounds for appeal, how determinations are made, and the appeal process timeline as documented in the newly updated Section IV: Appeal Process of Accreditation Process, Policies, and Procedures (AP3).

Transformation. It challenges us not just to do old things in new ways, but to do new things altogether. It encourages us to “Think Like a Startup.” That’s what we’ll be doing as we explore the concepts of entrepreneurialism shared by Brian Mathews of Virginia Tech in his paper, “Think Like a Startup.” Our panel of librarians will share stories of the messy, disruptive, and rewarding thrill of doing new things in new ways. This lively breakfast is designed to motivate you to think about new possibilities for your library, your colleagues, and the patrons you serve. The discussion is designed to be participatory by all attendees.

Zine Library Day, July 21, is an international celebration of zine libraries. Come hear about what other libraries did in its inaugural year, and brainstorm how your library can put on an easy and engaging ZLD program.

The Annual CIP Advisory Group Meeting is open to everyone. There will be updates on new initiatives in the CIP Program, including the new CIP E-Book Metadata Project. (Library of Congress)

Breaking out of the negative media stereotype, this film tells the human rights story of post-9/11 America that every undocumented immigrant in the US faces today. The film became a clear agent for change and a breaking news story when the Wasilewski family was reunited in Chicago in August 2011.
