Privacy Conversation Deliberative Forum and Moderator Training Preconference.

Meeting of the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color Steering Committee planning the 2nd National Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC), September 19-23, 2012. Representatives from AILA, APALA, BCALA, CALA and REFORMA.

This is a meeting for the ALA Training, Orientation and Leadership Development (TOLD) Committee.

New and experienced External Review Panelist (ERP) pool members are invited and encouraged to attend this session on the role of ERP members in the ALA accreditation process. Participants will learn about the comprehensive review process and timeline, hear from experienced panelists, and work in a group to analyze a sample Program Presentation. This session will focus on Standard II: Curriculum of the 2008 ALA Standards for Accreditation.

Participation in a training session is a prerequisite for serving on a review panel. Currently assigned ERPs are especially encouraged to attend.

Diversity has become an increasingly important issue within our profession and association. The five associations of ethnic librarians (AILA, APALA, BCALA, CALA and REFORMA), the GLBTRT, and ASCLA’s LSSPS, serve as important forums for the advancement of diversity and service to diverse users. The Town Hall will provide an opportunity to hear from these seven member groups, to discuss their current efforts towards achieving a more diverse profession and to identify new opportunities for collaboration and support across the profession. The Diversity Town Hall is open to all conference attendees.

Let the name authority experts teach you to create authority records in the RDA environment. At this one-day workshop learn to assign MARC 21 data for name authorities: persons, families, corporate, conferences, places, including preferred titles for works and expressions, with focus on the new MARC 21 fields that can be used now with AACR2!

Targeted at library directors, department heads and senior staff from public, academic and special libraries, this hands-on workshop will train participants in dialogue facilitation skills with proven success in strengthening partnerships, building effective teams across departments and organizations, and raising the profile of the library as a center for community life. Participants will leave with valuable facilitation skills that can immediately be put to use for their libraries and communities.

Turning the Page 2.0 addresses core issues of advocacy, communications and relationship building in a convenient blended-learning format. This half-day kickoff introduces librarians and supporters to the 6-week course, which will include virtual classroom sessions and self-paced online work aimed at completing an individual advocacy work plan. Attendance at this meeting is encouraged but not mandatory for the 6-week course. Come and hear how librarians and administrators from libraries of all sectors showcase creative strategies and practices in developing sustainable partnerships with local organizations. Presenters will discuss case studies of international collaborations between U.S. and international libraries that represent innovative practices in developing program proposals, mobilizing community support, and raising funds. The $75 registration fee includes light refreshments and lunch. (Program is followed by lunch)

This session will introduce the key concepts underpinning the Islandora Digital Asset Management system. Participants will learn the basics of running this rich repository system and how to utilize common "solution packs" to create and theme collections in Islandora. Participants will learn how to begin modeling and curating custom data collections, and how to migrate from other repository systems, including ContentDM, DSpace and more. Textbooks and system access will be provided; participants should bring computers.

High quality metadata: billions of bibliographic records, finding aids, descriptions of digital content - is a major asset of the library community. Agreement is growing on the benefits of transforming this wealth into linked data. Much experimentation is taking place. However, production-quality tools and infrastructure for linked data are in their infancy. This pre-conference will bring together catalogers and programmers to initiate the systematic, consensus-building approach needed to make Library Linked Data reality.
