Turning the Page 2.0 addresses core issues of advocacy, communications and relationship building in a convenient blended-learning format. This half-day kickoff introduces librarians and supporters to the 6-week course, which will include virtual classroom sessions and self-paced online work aimed at completing an individual advocacy work plan. Attendance at this meeting is encouraged but not mandatory for the 6-week course. The preconference will introduce attendees to both the habit of continuing one’s own professional learning and to the value inherent in building and sustaining strong teams in any organization.

Looking for inventive ideas for promoting library services? The New Jersey State Library developed "The Outspoken Library" to promote free online services that are available for print-disabled people. This program allows library customers to access services administered through the State Library's Talking Book & Braille Center (TBBC), including audio newspapers (TBBC's Audiovision and NFB's Newsline) and the Library of Congress's Braille and Audio Reading Download service. It will help you to create story ideas of your own, to develop story seminars for others, and to better select stories with broad appeal. Based upon Gene’s 30 years of entertainment experience and new research, this presentation sheds new light upon a blockbusters’ ability to satisfy child-like emotional needs we all share, align with pop culture and trends, create relatable and aspiring characters, and provide ingredients to create massive franchises.

Training staff to take on leadership roles in your library addresses their interests in assuming additional responsibility as well as cultivates successors into leadership positions. Especially in difficult times, libraries need to continue looking forward and developing their future leaders and managers. This presentation will discuss innovative ways that San Diego County (CA) and Orange County (FL) Library Systems have fostered and developed leaders and potential managers from within existing staff as well as introduced three leadership programs to assist staff into ascending the rungs of leadership.

The role of librarians as trusted navigators leading patrons to the most useful information is increasingly valuable. Smart investing@ your library is building the capacity of public libraries and librarians to provide reliable, unbiased financial education and resources to those who need help. Librarians are building collections, delivering programs to people of all ages and economic circumstances and creating a national network of replicable service models. Using data to tell the story, reaching out and working with community partners, and integrating market research into program design are helping build the foundation for a leadership role in financial education.
