Auditorium Speaker - David Weinberger Author Event, Speaker series Anaheim Convention Center
Ballroom DE
Description :

David Weinberger is a celebrated Internet philosopher and co-author of The Cluetrain Manifesto. His most recent book, Too Big to Know, provides a compelling vision of the future of knowledge in a connected world, shaking the foundations of our concept of knowledge—from the role of facts to the value of books and the authority of experts. “We used to know how to know. We got our answers from books or experts. We’d nail down the facts and move on. But in the Internet age, knowledge has moved onto networks. There’s more knowledge than ever, of course, but it’s different. Topics have no boundaries, and nobody agrees on anything.”

Weinberger describes Too Big to Know as being “about what happens to knowledge and expertise now that we are faced with the fact that there is way way way more to know than can be known by any individual. Its hypothesis is that knowledge and expertise are becoming networks, and are taking on the properties of networks.” The book shows how business, science, education, and the government are learning to use networked knowledge to understand more than ever and to make smarter decisions.

A senior researcher at Harvard University’s Berkman Center for the Internet & Society, and co-director of the Harvard Library Innovation Lab, Weinberger is also the author of Small Pieces Loosely Joined and Everything is Miscellaneous. His writing has appeared in Wired, Smithsonian, The Guardian, USA Today, TV Guide, Information Week, The New York Times, and The Boston Globe, and he has been a frequent commentator on National Public Radio. He has been a strategic marketing advisor to high tech companies, an Internet advisor to presidential campaigns. , and has a Ph.D. in philosophy.

Weinberger’s appearance is sponsored by Basic Books.

Auditorium Speaker: Teens Making a Difference ft. William Kamkwamba and Talia Leman Author Event, Speaker series Anaheim Convention Center
Ballroom DE
Description :

William Kamkwamba grew up in Malawi believing that magic ruled the world and hardship dominated life. The story of how he achieved his dream of bringing electricity, light, and the promise of a better life to his family and his village—despite financial obstacles, technical difficulties, needing to teach himself physics, and overcome local superstitions—is told in the New York Times best-seller (co-authored with Bryan Mealer), The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope. Kamkwamba shares his vision for “a new kind of Africa, a place of leaders instead of victims, a home of innovation rather than charity.” He has appeared on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, CSPAN Book-TV, and NPR, and has addressed audiences at the 2008 World Economic Forum, multiple times at TED, and at schools and universities across the globe. A 2007 TED Global Fellow, he was a student in the inaugural class of the Pan-African Leadership Academy in South Africa.

Talia Leman has orchestrated the philanthropic efforts of 12 million children on four continents. At the age of 12, she raised over $10 million for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, ranking in the top three of all fundraisers, including major international organizations and corporations. She has since raised money for water projects on three continents, built schools in Cambodia, and is currently spearheading a Japan relief effort with children around the world. Through the nonprofit organization RandomKid, frequent speaking engagements, and now a new book, Leman provides tools that equip kids for life-changing philanthropic activities. A former national ambassador for UNICEF, she is a recipient of the National Jefferson Award, World of Children's Founder’s Youth Award, regarded as the "Nobel Prize” for efforts that serve the world’s children, and the International Youth Talent Award from the European Union and the Spanish government of Extremadura.

Please note Gaby Rodriguez will not be able to attend the conference.
Gaby Rodriguez (now 18 and a college student) made national headlines in 2011 as the 17-year-old high school senior from Toppenish, WA, who revealed she had faked a pregnancy for a class project—a story that became the book and Lifetime movie The Pregnancy Project. In it, she shares her experience growing up in the shadow of low expectations, reveals how she was able to fake her own pregnancy, and what she learned from the experience. Raised by a single mother, with seven brothers and sisters, Rodriguez was told growing up that she would end up a teen mother, like her own mother and older sisters had. She had other ambitions, and the question that sparked her project was: how would she be perceived if she "lived down" to others expectations about the path her life would take? She received the regional ACLU award for Youth Activist.

NCSU Libraries Mobile Scavenger Hunt
Anne Burke - NCSU Libraries

Hoping to enliven traditional library orientation, three NCSU librarians developed the NCSU Libraries Mobile Scavenger Hunt, a mobile-based game delivered using iPods and free cloud-based tools like Evernote and Google Docs. The game sends teams of students in search of answers to clues that orient them to the library’s spaces, collections, and technologies. The activity provides a fun, low-stakes means to promote resources and services critical to academic success and invites students to explore the building and interact with staff, drawing connections between the virtual and physical library.

Since Fall 2011, librarians have facilitated over almost 100 scavenger hunts, reaching over 1,700 (primarily ENG 101) students. Feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive, with the most common comment being: “We want more time to do this!” The project was awarded the 2012 CLS ProQuest Innovation in College Librarianship Award.

My short talk will outline our rationale for developing this activity, the way scavenger hunt works, and feedback we have received from faculty and students.

Before the first Connection: A marketing Campaign for a Law Library’s Mobile Application
Terry Ballard - New York Law School, Mendik Library

Ballard will detail the activities of a law school library to develop a marketing campaign for their mobile application while waiting for the technology to be completed. This included a URL that automatically detected incoming mobile connections and rerouted them to the correct store, posters that included the URL and QR codes to lead users to the web page, postings in the library blog, bookmarks at the reserve desk emphasizing the renewal function, and a group shot of librarians holding up their cell phones on release day. Ballard will also discuss the multi-dimensional tracking of usage.

Gimme! The mobile app development project at Scotsdale Public Library
Aimee Fifarek, Scottsdale Public Library

"Oh good we got the grant! Oh no we got the grant!" That was pretty much our reaction when the LSTA funding came in for our mobile app development project. We knew that we wanted to develop a mobile app for our customers but that's where our knowedge ended. I'll be talking about how we used our consultants (a market research firm and programmer) to develop the Gimme Engine, a book recommendation app. During the process we learned a lot about project management, working with non-library professionals, and integrating existing technologies to make our funding dollar go father. The lessons we learned may be vaulable to those of you who are looking to hired guns to make your mobile dreams come true.

From ALA to ALIA: Conference mentoring in Australia Poster session Anaheim Convention Center
Exhibit Hall Poster Area Table 14
Description :

Can a model used successfully for over a decade in the American context be transplanted to the Australian environment? The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) has a proud history of new graduate activity and innovation. The New Librarians Symposium has been running successfully on a biennial basis for a decade, and the new graduate movement is strong. The researcher, an active new graduate and member of the New Generation Advisory Committee (NGAC), recognized there was a gap in support for new graduates at large plenary conferences. A colleague in NGAC who attended ALA Annual in 2008 brought back the idea of "conference mentoring," a program used successfully by the ALA New Members Round Table (NMRT) for many years. After applying for and winning the ALIA Study Grant in 2010, the researcher implemented a trial of conference mentoring at ALIA's largest conference, ALIA Information Online, in Sydney in February 2011. This poster will summarize the findings of the trial, highlighting modifications to the program and differences noted in implementing conference mentoring in a local context.

The starting point is the satisfaction of the users' preferences in order to reach integration, innovation and information for all. Poster session Anaheim Convention Center
Exhibit Hall Poster Area Table 6
Description :

This poster shows the results of a 2010 study carried out in public libraries in Havana that aimed to know the reading preferences and interests of library users. The present objective is to take advantage of these data to make new work projections for the years 2011 to 2013. This investigation takes as antecedent other similar studies carried out in 2004 and 2007 that were presented in the poster sessions of the IFLA Congresses held in Buenos Aires and Qu_bec. The present study will upgrade and enrich the previous studies, and add new and interesting data that will allow for new strategies. The new data will also allow for the design of projects that improve information services, promotion of reading, the development of collections and cultural programming, and enhance the quality of life for those who attend our units of information. The starting point is the satisfaction of the users' preferences in order to reach integration, innovation, and information for all.

Chat, Chow & Web 2.0: Channeling Technology to Create Alliances Poster session Anaheim Convention Center
Exhibit Hall Poster Area Table 18
Description :

Information technology, instructional technology, and library staff members at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota are in the midst of the fourth year of a successful faculty and staff development series, Chat, Chow & Web 2.0, hosted in the library. Centered on collaboration and innovation, this series is designed to allow colleagues at a small liberal arts university an opportunity to discuss the scholarship of teaching and learning (Chat), during lunch (Chow), while providing an introduction to new educational technologies (Web 2.0). Two immediate achievements have resulted from this programming. First, Chat, Chow & Web 2.0 has created a new and inviting way to address the scholarship of teaching and learning. Second, working collaboratively, the library, information technology, and instructional technology staff have built strong alliances, improved communication, and broken down barriers while effectively fulfilling a staff and faculty development need. The success of this programming can be measured by the positive feedback from attendees, an increase in technology use in the classroom, increasing numbers of attendees, and continuing financial support from administration. Our session will emphasize the cornerstones of the program, and include a captioned computer slideshow highlighting topics covered, photos, feedback from participants, successes, and lessons learned.

Reclaiming Main Street and Libraries - featuring Richard Harwood, founder of the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation Program Anaheim Convention Center

Americans feel the country is lost amid a sea of changes. They want to get back to basics of compassion, simpler living, openness and humility and the common good and to kick-start a new trajectory for the country that begins with small, local actions. ALA is one of the first stops on Harwood's national tour.

This session will give ALA members from all types of libraries an opportunity to consider the implications of the Main Street study for our work as agents of democracy, ranging from building public dialogue skills and engaging a variety of communities at the local level to lobbying and galvanizing grass roots action at the national level.
