Conversation Starters: Military Writers Workshops: Community Programming for Military Veterans Program Anaheim Convention Center
208A
Description :

Join us for a discussion of our experiences organizing, planning, and promoting a series of writing workshops for military veterans in the Washington, D.C. area. Our project builds upon the work of Amy Hartman and Holly Baumgartner that was featured in American Libraries in November 2011; as federal librarians, we were eager to extend such an excellent opportunity for education and lifelong learning to a greater number of veterans. Come learn about the importance of community programming for military veterans, the challenges that libraries may face in the process of developing programs for veterans, and the steps involved in designing our writing workshops! Attendees will gain an appreciation of the art of writing memoir, and will learn that memoir writing offers non-professional writers opportunities to enrich their lives by creating stories based on life experiences, as well as to contribute to the cultural and historical record. Presenters will also discuss marketing, outreach, and promotion of writing workshops, and strategies for overcoming the challenges associated with recruiting participants. We hope you will join us!

- Nancy Faget, Information Resources Branch Chief, Army Research Laboratory; Michelle Dunaway, MLIS Candidate, University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences, and ALA NMRT-FAFLRT Liaison, 2011-2012

Presenters will describe the challenges of managing eBook selection and acquisition, discuss how libraries and approval vendors deal with evolving publishing patterns, and suggest strategies for acquiring eBooks as a preferred format.

Patron Driven Acquisition in Consortia Program Anaheim Convention Center
213D
Description :

Patron-driven acquisition and purchase-on-demand models are being tested in multi-type and same-type library systems and consortia in several pockets of the country. These pilots empower patrons to select print materials, e-books or both for their local library collection while meeting their own immediate information needs. These initiatives allow libraries to test specific theories to gauge the impact a patron-driven acquisition model will have on local and regional collections, circulation, budgets, usage and user services. Join us as we learn from a panel of speakers about some of these initiatives and their outcomes.

Developing a Downloadable Audiobook Collection in an Academic Library Poster session Anaheim Convention Center
Exhibit Hall Poster Area Table 15
Description :

Downloadable audiobooks are a relatively new addition to the ever-widening world of electronic resources available in libraries. Instead of checking out audiobooks as physical CDs, patrons are able to access them as digital audio files through the library's website. Once the patron "checks out" the audiobook online, it can be downloaded to a home computer, laptop, or a variety of portable listening devices (such as iPhones). Seeing electronic audiobooks as potentially very helpful for college students, two academic librarians at Southeastern Louisiana University developed a small collection as a pilot project for their library. This poster session illustrates their experience with starting the project, including the various questions and choices they encountered. How should a provider be chosen? What if funding is not available for a subscription service? Can the audio files be downloaded to any of the different mobile devices library users may own? The poster also highlights the selection process and the efforts the librarians made to choose audiobook titles that would be most relevant to academic coursework. The poster session will feature portable listening devices with selected audio clips in order to demonstrate usability and sound quality to attendees.

Ignite Session: Ebooks Must Replace Paper Textbooks, and Librarians Must Lead the Charge Program Anaheim Convention Center
208A Table 4
Description :

Ignite speakers present for exactly 5 minutes, accompanied by 20 slides. Each slide is displayed for 15 seconds, with slides advancing automatically. This is one of six Ignite sessions in this time slot.

As the costs of education at all levels continue to spiral out of control, textbooks (and schoolbooks of all kinds) in electronic format could provide a way for both students and educators to reduce their out-of-pocket expense. Such books are also more convenient to use and more durable than paper books. This presentation is a call for school, academic, and public librarians to take the lead in making electronic texts available as an option for students. There are many complicated problems to be resolved, including issues related to hardware, software, intellectual property, the rights of authors, education policy, and teaching strategies. But the expertise of librarians, and their commitment to service, make them the people best qualified to confront these issues.

Catalog Management Interest Group Discussion/Interest group Hyatt Regency Orange County
Royal Ballroom E
Description :

The meeting will focus on vendor provided MARC records for titles acquired via Patron Driven Acquisitions (PDA) or Data/ Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) programs and the impact of these records on the catalog.

Mary Gilbertson, University of Arkansas Libraries
The University of Arkansas uses the criteria from its YBP book approval plan for their DDA records. The ebook vendor is ebrary, but the approval plan criteria filter the records that are loaded. A load table adds various fields to the cataloging records.

Roman Panchyshyn, Kent State University Libraries
At the Table: Developing a Cataloging Workflow for a Successful Demand-Driven Acquisitions Project
When KSUL began negotiations with YBP to implement a DDA pilot, cataloging staff provided input on MARC record preparation and specifications, record delivery, and workflow processes. This presentation covers the role cataloging staff played in developing and implementing a DDA pilot project; how the bibliographic records are loaded, overlaid, and maintained; and the issues that were discovered while working with these record sets.

Elyssa Sanner, Northern Michigan University
Patron-Driven E-book Acquisitions at NMU: Worth the Effort?
NMU recently implemented PDA through YBP/EBL. Enhanced discovery records were purchased. Through trial-and-error, NMU found solutions that simultaneously maintain the integrity of the catalog and manage resources by editing the elements that pose the greatest barriers to patron discovery.

Sadie Williams, Ebook Library
Tom Larsen, Portland State University Library
Building and Evaluating a Collaborative Consortial Demand-Driven Cataloging Workflow
In January 2011, the 36-member Orbis Cascade Alliance, in partnership with EBL and YBP, announced a new collaboration in consortial e-book acquisitions. This presentation discusses the cataloging workflow to support that program; the decisions and collaborative effort across member institutions and vendors to develop the workflow; the successes, issues, and lessons learned along the way; the role of vendors in the creation of the cataloging records; and the importance of maintaining DDA cataloging records as they affect DDA expenditure and usage.

Wen-ying Lu, University of Colorado Boulder
Mary Beth Chambers, University of Colorado Colorado Springs
PDA Consortium Style: The CU MyiLibrary Cataloging Experience
Boulder's MyiLibrary PDA program has expanded to include all campuses within the UC System, thus launching a collaborative pilot project for shared purchasing and cataloging of e-books. This presentation covers the workflow used to share MARC records; discusses factors affecting editing and customization of the records; and includes strategies for detecting and resolving errors handling PDA discovery records for titles duplicated in other e-book packages.
