This fun, insightful presentation, based upon Gene Del Vecchio’s revealing new book, Creating Blockbusters!, outlines 11 crucial principles that explain why certain novels and films become great. It will help you to create story ideas of your own, to develop story seminars for others, and to better select stories with broad appeal. Based upon Gene’s 30 years of entertainment experience and new research, this presentation sheds new light upon a blockbusters’ ability to satisfy child-like emotional needs we all share, align with pop culture and trends, create relatable and aspiring characters, and provide ingredients to create massive franchises.

eBooks are becoming a preferred format for many libraries; however, acquiring eBooks on an approval plan can be challenging. This presentation will discuss how two university libraries have partnered with approval plan vendors to integrate “e” (eBook) and “p” (print book) acquisition into approval profiles. Presenters will describe the challenges of managing eBook selection and acquisition, discuss how libraries and approval vendors deal with evolving publishing patterns, and suggest strategies for acquiring eBooks as a preferred format.

Authors panel of Kenneth Oppel, Kendare Blake, Jackson Pearce, and Cindy Pon will discuss the genre appeal of paranormal fiction for young adults and how they've each taken a fresh approach to the genre. Attendees will hear about what the YA paranormal genre has to offer than with a chance to hear about the wide variety of styles and contents within the genre. The panel will give particular insight in how approaching this best-selling genre from a unique perspective makes it even more relevant and interesting to a diverse audience of teen readers.

The role of librarians as trusted navigators leading patrons to the most useful information is increasingly valuable. Smart investing@ your library is building the capacity of public libraries and librarians to provide reliable, unbiased financial education and resources to those who need help. Librarians are building collections, delivering programs to people of all ages and economic circumstances and creating a national network of replicable service models. Using data to tell the story, reaching out and working with community partners, and integrating market research into program design are helping build the foundation for a leadership role in financial education.

Faced with growing e-collections, more interesting e-content from publishers and a struggle to balance our materials budgets, how do we make good decisions about e-collections content? How do we evaluate the success of e-books when many of these patrons never darken the doors of our library building? How do we gain the valuable patron feedback beyond download statistics? What support issues arise around use of the collections, are the vendor platforms reliable, and what e-formats are most in demand? Hear how representatives from both public and academic libraries are measuring the success and challenges of their e-book collections.

The newly revised Every Child Ready to Read recognizes that play is an important part of early literacy development and if play is a child's work then what better tools than toys! This will be hands-on fun for everyone as you learn the tips and tricks of effectively using toys to educate and entertain in your library and beyond.

Consolidated meeting time and location for EBSS committees.

The HarperCollins Library Marketing team is pleased to present forthcoming titles for Fall 2012 & Winter 2013. Get the inside track on your favorite authors and discover a few new ones! Light refreshments will be served.

This interactive session will cover the basics of developing collections in music in a variety of formats. Participants will learn how to identify the types of printed music and sound recordings that meet the needs of their patrons, and develop strategies for building or expanding collections. Print and electronic formats, music vendors, and helpful resources will all be examined.

Open to anyone interested in the Administration of Collection Management. This meeting will have four 15 minutes speakers, two from public and two from academic libraries. They will speak on the Administration of Public Libraries from their point of view. Then there will be a 30 minute discussion on the topic.
