Presented by Joe Matthews, noted library consultant, library assessment guru, co-author of the award winning book "Listening to the Customer", as well as "The Customer-Focused Library: Reinventing the Public Library from the Outside-In".

This program will outline a theoretically driven pragmatic approach to leadership by presenting leadership styles and appropriate applications to give the participants a solid cookbook approach to resolving various situational and structural issues.

Jay Johnston is Director of the Farmington Libraries, Farmington CT. His vision, knowledge of technology, coalition building skills, and belief in the importance of the public library sustain his dedication to a staff-centered, customer-focused, high-energy leadership model.

Christine Bradley is currently the director of Norwalk Public Library.

"Reimagining the library catalog: changing user needs, changing functionality"

Do we need to change our perspective on what the catalog should be doing based on changes in the education and economic environment? What is needed, what could be changed, and what would be worth retaining, taking economic realities and educational goals into consideration? It has been argued that catalogs are not giving users what they need nor taking into account how they search. There is an objection to cataloging favoring the 1% using the library for research at the expense of the 99%. If cataloging practice is biased toward scholarly research, and we are able to change the bias, will this change the overall quality of education? If the bias is changed in favor of non-scholarly uses, how does the Library of Congress respond? What are the identifiable changes in scholarly discovery in the web environment that could change our perspectives on cataloging support of research?

Three presentations will be featured on the topic of Resource Description & Access:

Judith Cannan, Chief, Cooperative & Instructional Programs Division, Library of Congress, will discuss the Library of Congress RDA training plan for staff located in the U.S. and in LC's overseas offices.

Cynthia Whitacre, Manager, WorldCat Quality & Partner Content Department, OCLC: OCLC members were invited early in 2012 to share comments on the OCLC discussion paper on RDA. Cynthia will share feedback received from member libraries on implementation of RDA and what the next steps will be for OCLC. Initial plans for OCLC member training, revised OCLC documentation, and what to expect in WorldCat bibliographic records with RDA implementation by the US national libraries in 2013 will be included.

Chris Cronin, Director of Technical Services, University of Chicago, will give background on how the University of Chicago implemented RDA, and will discuss policies and procedures for handling copy when found in the utilities, whether it be RDA or not. Chris will explain why the University of Chicago implemented RDA immediately after the formal test, challenges they encountered, and the impact on staff and training.

The PELS Committee of the LLAMA LOMS has conducted a brief survey to identify important planning elements and trends to consider when planning services. In this session, participants will be invited to join a lively discussion of current trends regarding the future of academic libraries and actions needed to address them.

Training staff to take on leadership roles in your library addresses their interests in assuming additional responsibility as well as cultivates successors into leadership positions. Especially in difficult times, libraries need to continue looking forward and developing their future leaders and managers. This presentation will discuss innovative ways that San Diego County (CA) and Orange County (FL) Library Systems have fostered and developed leaders and potential managers from within existing staff as well as introduced three leadership programs to assist staff into ascending the rungs of leadership.
