Join us for a discussion of our experiences organizing, planning, and promoting a series of writing workshops for military veterans in the Washington, D.C. area. Our project builds upon the work of Amy Hartman and Holly Baumgartner that was featured in American Libraries in November 2011; as federal librarians, we were eager to extend such an excellent opportunity for education and lifelong learning to a greater number of veterans. Come learn about the importance of community programming for military veterans, the challenges that libraries may face in the process of developing programs for veterans, and the steps involved in designing our writing workshops! Attendees will gain an appreciation of the art of writing memoir, and will learn that memoir writing offers non-professional writers opportunities to enrich their lives by creating stories based on life experiences, as well as to contribute to the cultural and historical record. Presenters will also discuss marketing, outreach, and promotion of writing workshops, and strategies for overcoming the challenges associated with recruiting participants. We hope you will join us!

The World According to Garp, which won the National Book Award in 1980, was John Irving’s fourth novel and his first international bestseller; it also became a George Roy Hill film. Irving’s novels are now translated into 35 languages. Worldwide, the Irving novel most often called “an American classic” is A Prayer for Owen Meany (1989), the portrayal of an enduring friendship at that time when the Vietnam War had its most divisive effect on the US. Less commonly known is that Irving competed as a wrestler for 20 years, coached the sport until he was 47, and was inducted in 1992 into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, OK. In 2000, he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Cider House Rules.

After months of deliberation, the AASL Best Websites for Teaching and Learning Committee is finally ready to unveil the AASL 2012 Top 25 Websites for Teaching and Learning. Join the committee as they share 25 websites that best support the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, inquiry learning and the curriculum.

ACRL leaders will meet with first-time attendees and explain how to get the most out of the ALA Annual Conference experience as well as opportunities for engagement with ACRL. A membership meeting (30 minutes) will be followed by the orientation program.

The ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) Advisory Committee will meet.
